Parasha Vayeira – Year 2 – Follow the Faith that will Save You
Shabbat Shalom, Nazarene family.
This week we bring the activity of the parashah Vayeira, portion of year 2, where we will see the story of the messengers (angels) sent by Elohim to save Lot from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. We will see how faith placed in the right place leads to the salvation of Lot and his family. In addition, we will see the story between Abraham and Abimelech and how Yahweh saved Sarah from the hands of the king of Gerar, being richly blessed after this.
B’reisheet (Genesis) 19:12-13
12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city—take them out of this place!
13 For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of Yahweh, and Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.”
This week corresponds to the reading of the texts (in bold):
- B’reisheet (Genesis) 18:1-33 / 19:1-20:18 / 21:1-22:24
- Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 4:1-17 / 4:18-37 / 4:38-44
- Luqa (Luke) 2:1-21 / 2:22-38 / 2:39-52
Summary of the weekly study, Year two:
B’reisheet (Genesis) 19:1-20:18
In these verses, two messengers visit Lot in Sodom to warn him of the impending judgment on the corrupt city. Lot welcomes and protects them, but the inhabitants of Sodom attempt to harm them. Yahweh destroys Sodom and Gomorrah, saving Lot and his family. In the next chapter, Abraham lies about his relationship with Sarah to King Abimelech. Yahweh intervenes to prevent Abimelech from committing a sin and admonishes him. Abraham prays for Abimelech, who returns Sarah and gives them wealth. These stories teach us the importance of obedience and faith in Yahweh Elohim over worldly adversities.
Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 4:18-37
In these verses, a woman of Shunem, blessed by Elisha with a son, suffers the loss of her son, who dies suddenly. The desperate woman goes in search of Elisha. The prophet, upon hearing of this, goes to the house and through an act of faith and prayer, resurrects the child. This story teaches us the importance of faith, persistence in prayer and the intervention of the Creator Yahweh in seemingly hopeless situations. It also highlights the power of Elohim to bring life even in the midst of death, strengthening the faith of the woman, those around her and our own.
Luqa (Luke) 2:22-38
In these verses, Miriam and Yoseph take the child Yeshua to the Temple to fulfill the law of purification after childbirth and to present him before Yahweh. There, they are received by Simeon, a righteous and pious man, who, moved by the Set Apart Spirit, recognizes Yeshua as the promised Messiah. Simeon takes the child in his arms and blesses Elohim for allowing him to see salvation. This narrative underscores Miriam and Yoseph’s faithfulness to Yahweh’s commandments and reveals how the eternal Father fulfills His promises by sending His Son to redeem mankind.

Enjoy this fun activity with the whole family. Inside you will find development questions for the three weekly sections (Torah, Haftarah and Brit Chadashah). While the older ones discuss the questions and their answers, the younger ones can color the picture related to the teaching, solve a maze, find the 7 differences and much more. We encourage you to do it week by week and instill in your children the habit of studying Yahweh’s word as a family.
We hope you and especially your sons and daughters enjoy this effort. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also to perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
Shalom.
