Parashat Ekev – Year 2 – The Impact of Disobedience.
Shabbat Shalom, Nazarene family.
This week we will study the parashat Ekev, portion of year 2, where we will discover how Yahweh fulfills His promise to give the Promised Land, not because of Israel’s righteousness, but because of the wickedness of the nations and His faithfulness to the patriarchs. We will also see the constant rebellion of the people, symbolized in the incident of the golden calf, and how Yahweh, in His great mercy, listens to the intercession of Moshe (Moses). Finally, we will learn about the renewal of the covenant and the giving of the new tablets of the Law.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 9:17-19
17 Then I took the two tablets and threw them out of my two hands and broke them before your eyes.
18 And I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you committed in doing wickedly in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke Him to anger.
19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which Yahweh was angry with you, to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me at that time also.
This week corresponds to the reading of the texts (in bold):
- Devarim (Deuteronomy) 7:12-9:3 / 9:4-10:11 / 10:12-11:25
- Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 49:1-7 / 49:8-26 / 50
- Yochanan (John) 13 / 14 / 15
Summary of the weekly study, Year two:
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 9:4-10:11
In these verses, Yahweh makes it clear that the conquest of the Promised Land is not because of Israel’s righteousness, but because of the wickedness of the nations and His faithfulness to the patriarchs. Moshe reminds the people of their continued rebellion, highlighting the grave sin of the golden calf, where they provoked Yahweh’s wrath. However, thanks to Moshe’s intercession, Yahweh shows mercy and does not destroy Israel. Moreover, He renews His covenant with them by giving them new tablets of the Law, reaffirming His commitment and calling them to obedience and faithfulness. It is a lesson of grace and responsibility.
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 49:8-26
In these verses, Yahweh promises to restore His people and extend His salvation to the nations. He assures to free the captives, provide for the needy and guide His people with compassion. Israel, though feeling abandonment, is comforted with the promise that Yahweh will never forget them, comparing His care to that of a mother to her child. The victory over the oppressors, the multiplication of the people and the faithfulness of Yahweh to fulfill His everlasting covenant are also proclaimed. This passage highlights the divine redemption, restoration and faithfulness, reminding His people that He always keeps His promises.
Yochanan (John) 14
In these verses, Yeshua comforts His disciples, assuring them that He prepares a place for them in His Father’s house. He reminds them that He is the way, the truth and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. He promises to send the Set-apart Spirit as a Comforter, who will guide them and teach them all things. Yeshua gives them peace and confidence to face the future, showing the intimate relationship between Him, the Father and the believers. This chapter teaches us about hope, fellowship and security in the promises of the Messiah.

Enjoy this fun activity with the whole family. Inside you will find development questions for the three weekly sections (Torah, Haftarah and Brit Chadashah). While the older ones discuss the questions and their answers, the younger ones can color the picture related to the teaching, solve a maze, find the 7 differences and much more. We encourage you to do it week by week and instill in your children the habit of studying Yahweh’s word as a family.
We hope you and especially your sons and daughters enjoy this effort. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also to perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
Shalom.
