Parashat Chayei Sarah – Year 3 – Isaac and Rebekah: United by Promise.
Shabbat Shalom, Nazarene family.
This week we will study the parashat Chayei Sarah, portion of year 3, where we will see how Avraham’s servant delivers gifts to Rebekah’s family and how she decides to go with him to marry Isaac. We will learn about the special meeting between Rebekah and Isaac and how she becomes part of the promised family. We will also read about Avraham’s last days, his death, and how he is buried. We will learn that Yahweh continues to fulfill His promises and that the story continues through Avraham’s children, including Ishmael and his descendants.
B’reisheet (Genesis) 24:60, 67
60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her: “Our sister, may you become The mother of thousands of ten thousands; And may your descendants possess The gates of those who hate them.”
67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
This week corresponds to the reading of the texts (in bold):
- B’reisheet (Genesis) 23:1-24:9 / 24:10-52 / 24:53-25:18
- Melachim Aleph (1 Kings) 1:1-10 / 1:11-27 / 1:28-53
- Mattityahu (Matthew) 2:1-12 / 2:13-18 / 2:19-23
Summary of the weekly study, Year three:
B’reisheet (Genesis) 24:53-25:18
In these verses, we see how Yahweh guides each step of Avraham’s servant to find a wife for Isaac, showing that He is present in our important decisions. Rebekah responds with faith and willingness, leaving her home to join Yahweh’s plan. We also read of Avraham’s death and how his legacy continues through Isaac and the sons of Ishmael. In this passage, we learn that Yahweh is faithful at every stage of life, directs the paths of those who trust in Him and fulfills what He has promised.
Melachim Aleph (1 Kings) 1:28-53
In these verses, we will see how King David, now an old man, ensures that his son Solomon is proclaimed as the next king, fulfilling the promise he had made. We will learn how everything is quickly arranged for Solomon to be anointed with the support of the priest and the prophet. We will also read how Adoniyahu, who had tried to take the throne on his own, learns of the new king and seeks protection. In this passage, we learn that Yahweh accomplishes His will in spite of human plans and that authority comes from Him, not from pride.
Mattityahu (Matthew) 2:39-52
In these verses, we will see how Yosef receives instructions in a dream to return to the land of Israel after the death of Herod. We will learn that, although he wishes to return to Judea, he decides to settle in Galilee as a precaution, and thus ends up living in a city called Nazareth. We will read that all this happens in order to fulfill what was spoken by the prophets. In this passage, we learn that Yahweh guides with wisdom in every step, even in the details, and that everything happens according to His purpose, even when we do not fully understand it.

Enjoy this fun activity with the whole family. Inside you will find development questions for the three weekly sections (Torah, Haftarah and Brit Chadasha). While the older ones discuss the questions and their answers, the younger ones can color the picture related to the teaching, solve a maze, find the 7 differences and much more. We encourage you to do it week by week and instill in your children the habit of studying Yahweh’s word as a family.
We hope you and especially your sons and daughters enjoy this effort. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also to perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
Shalom.
