Parashat Vayeshev – Year 3 – Joseph: Prisoner With Purpose.
Shabbat Shalom, Nazarene family.
This week we will study the parashat Vayeshev, portion of year 3, where we will see how Joseph, even though he is sold into slavery, remains faithful and righteous in everything he does. We will learn that even in difficult times, when things seem unfair or confusing, Yahweh continues with His plans. We will read how Joseph is falsely accused and sent to prison, but even there, Yahweh gives him favor and uses him to help others. This story shows us that even though we may not understand everything that happens, Yahweh never abandons us and is always working with purpose.
B’reisheet (Genesis) 39:21-22
21 But Yahweh was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.
22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing.
This week corresponds to the reading of the texts (in bold):
- B’reisheet (Genesis) 37:1-36 / 38:1-30 / 39:1-40:23
- Amos 2:1-16 / 3:1-8 / 3:9-15
- Yochanan (John) 2 / 3 / 4
Summary of the weekly study, Year three:
B’reisheet (Genesis) 39:1-40:23
In these verses, we see how Joseph, despite being sold into slavery and then unjustly imprisoned, maintains an attitude of integrity and trust in Yahweh. He does not allow himself to be overcome by discouragement or seek revenge, but serves with excellence wherever he is. Yahweh is with him at every stage, giving him favor in the eyes of those around him. Even in prison, Joseph is an instrument of help to others. In this passage, we learn that faithfulness in the midst of trials bears fruit and that Yahweh never abandons those who trust in Him.
Amos 3:9-15
In these verses, the prophet Amos announces an imminent judgment on Samaria for its injustice, violence, and neglect of its covenant with Yahweh. The nations are invited to observe the corruption of Israel, a nation that has accumulated wealth through oppression and has forgotten to do what is right. Yahweh declares that he will come as a witness against them and that his punishment will extend to both their luxuries and their idolatrous altars. In this passage, we learn that when justice is ignored and power is abused, the time comes when Yahweh acts decisively to correct and restore.
Yochanan (John) 4
In these verses, Yeshua converses with a Samaritan woman at the well, breaking down cultural barriers and showing her the love and truth of Yahweh. He speaks to her about the “living water” that quenches forever and reveals that He is the Messiah. Many Samaritans believe in Him because of her testimony and His words. Then, Yeshua heals the son of an official without even going to see him, demonstrating the power of faith. In this passage, we learn that Yeshua offers eternal life, that sincere faith transcends appearances, and that Yahweh seeks worshipers in spirit and in truth.

Enjoy this fun activity with the whole family. Inside you will find development questions for the three weekly sections (Torah, Haftarah and Brit Chadasha). While the older ones discuss the questions and their answers, the younger ones can color the picture related to the teaching, solve a maze, find the 7 differences and much more. We encourage you to do it week by week and instill in your children the habit of studying Yahweh’s word as a family.
We hope you and especially your sons and daughters enjoy this effort. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also to perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
Shalom.
