Prophet Elisha – Messenger of Miracles and Faith

Shabbat shalom, Nazarene family.

This week we will learn about the story of the prophet Elisha and some of the many miracles he worked through the supernatural power of Yahweh. We will learn the importance of practicing faith in the trials and struggles of our daily lives, having humility and prayer as two powerful weapons to overcome.
The biblical passages used in this study are:
  • The purification of the water of Jericho: Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 2:19-22
  • The resurrection of the son of the Shunammite woman: Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 4:8-37
  • The healing of Naaman the leper: Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 5:1-14
  • The floating of the iron axe: Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 6:1-7
  • King Joash’s visit before his death: Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 13:14-21

Some of the lessons learned from this study include:
  • The prophet Elisha purified the waters of Jericho by throwing salt into its source, restoring the fertility of the soil and the health of the community. This miracle exemplifies the divine ability to heal and restore what is damaged. Salt symbolizes purity and preservation, highlighting Yahweh’s supernatural intervention through the prophet. The story teaches about trust in divine providence and the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. The purification of the water at Jericho highlights the power of Yahweh to transform adverse situations and bring healing and restoration to our lives.

  • The story of the Shunammite woman and the prophet Elisha tells how this generous woman and her husband take in Elisha, building him a room in their home. In return, Elisha blesses them with a son. Tragically, the boy dies, but Elisha, with faith and prayer, resurrects him. This story highlights the importance of hospitality, faith and generosity. Furthermore, it shows how Yahweh rewards goodness and trust in his power. The relationship between the Shunammite woman and Elisha reflects reciprocity in human relationships and divine intervention in everyday lives.

  • In King Joash’s deathbed visit to Elisha, the prophet urges him to open a window to the east and shoot arrows, symbolizing victory over the Arameans. This act illustrates the importance of obedience and faith in divine direction, even in critical moments. The interaction highlights the relationship between spiritual and secular leadership, showing how faith can influence the direction and protection of a nation. The final lesson is trust in Yahweh to face challenges, even in times of transition and adversity.

In short, the life of the prophet Elisha is marked by his faithfulness to Yahweh and his power to work miracles. From Eliyahu’s calling of him while plowing, to his prophetic ministry, Elisha demonstrated unwavering faith. Through the teaching of this prophet, we learn about the importance of dependence on Yahweh, generosity and selfless service, being an example of righteousness and dedication to the divine will.

Melachim Bet (2 Kings) 2:14-15
14 Then he took the mantle of Eliyahu that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is Yahweh Elohim of Eliyahu?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.
15 Now when the sons of the prophets who were from Jericho saw him, they said, “The spirit of Eliyahu rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him, and bowed to the ground before him.

Remember, obedience to Yahweh’s commandments will bring blessing but disobedience will lead to the perdition of our souls eternally. Decide what you will do today.

We hope that you, and especially your sons and daughters, will enjoy this activity. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
