Adam and Eve’s Disobedience – Breaking the Rules
Shabbat shalom, Nazarene family.
This week we will study the creation of Eve, Adam’s companion and how she was created. In addition, we will study what was the grave mistake that Adam and Eve made in the Garden of Eden that brought about consequences that we experience even today. However, in spite of everything, Yahweh demonstrated His love and mercy upon them, allowing them to continue living and multiplying on the earth He had created.
The biblical passages used in this study are:
- The creation of Eve: B’reisheet (Genesis) 2:20-25
- Adam and Eve’s disobedience: B’reisheet (Genesis) 3:1-19
Some of the lessons learned from this study include:
- The creation of the woman, Eve, as a companion for Adam. Yahweh, after forming the animals and allowing Adam to give them names, recognizes Adam’s loneliness. He then creates Eve from a rib of Adam, showing their equality and complementarity. This passage highlights the importance of companionship and intimate connection in human relationships. Furthermore, it establishes the institution of marriage as a divine union between man and woman, reflecting the image of Elohim and proclaiming unity and intimacy as fundamental elements of marriage
- The fall of mankind. The serpent tempts Eve to disobey Yahweh, who had forbidden them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve, influenced by the serpent, and Adam, who also eats of the fruit, sin against Elohim. As a consequence, they experience shame and the knowledge of good and evil. Yahweh pronounces curses on the serpent, the woman and the man, including pain in childbirth and hard labor. This passage reveals the consequences of sin and the need for redemption.
In summary, in this study we will see that all of Yahweh’s creation has its perfect purpose. To deviate from this purpose is what will bring us pain and suffering, such as that experienced by Adam and Eve in the garden because of their disobedience to Yahweh’s commands. Let us remember that Yahweh desires that we obey and love him above all things.
B’reisheet (Genesis) 2:15-17
15 Then Yahweh Elohim took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
16 And Yahweh Elohim commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
We hope that you, and especially your sons and daughters, will enjoy this activity. For it is through the study of the Scriptures that we can come to understand the love and care that Yahweh has always had for us. And also perceive that He has been taking care of even the smallest detail, so that we can take care and enjoy all that He gives us. That is why it is so important that our children learn and grow up knowing that they are loved by the Creator of all that exists.
Shalom.
